Black Women Make History at Miss USA, Miss Teen USA And Miss America | NowThis

For the first time in U.S. pageant history, three Black women were crowned with national titles. Now that’s Black excellence and Black girl magic.

Cheslie Kryst 2019 Miss USA – Kryst is a civil litigation attorney who works on behalf of prison inmates, environmental cases, and gov’t disputes. She’s also been an outspoken advocate for the #MeToo & #TimesUp movements. Kryst earned three degrees from two universities.

Kaliegh Garris, 2019 Miss Teen USA – The New Haven, Connecticut native founded ‘We Are People 1st.’ The movement aims to educate people on how to respectfully talk about disabilities. Garris says the initiative is in honor of her sister who ‘has multiple disabilities.’ Garris plans to goto college to become a trauma nurse.

Nia Franklin, Miss America 2019 – Franklin holds a degree in music composition and fine arts. She is also a classically trained opera singer and composer. In 2018, she was crowned Miss New York.

Miss America was founded in 1921. During its first 30 years as an org, Black women weren’t allowed to compete.
