Carlos Vela scores as LAFC clinch the Supporters’ Shield | MLS Highlights

Carlos Vela moved within one goal of Atlanta United striker Josef Martinez’s single-season scoring record as Los Angeles FC clinched the 2019 MLS Supporters’ Shield with a 3-1 win vs. the Houston Dynamo at Banc of California Stadium. Vela became the second player to score 30 goals in a season with an early penalty after Brian Rodriguez was brought down by Aljaz Struna. Struna quickly redeemed himself by forcing an own goal from Tyler Miller for the equalizer. Vela nearly had a second penalty one minute later, but VAR determined that Lee Nguyen was fouled outside of the box. LAFC found the winner in the 70th minute through Diego Rossi and added a third from an Eduard Atuesta free kick. The result ended LAFC’s five-match winless streak and moved them within three points of the New York Red Bulls record of 71 points in a season.
